Friday 3 May 2013

I just want to mention the performance of 'Too Long in Exile' which is taking place in the dark gallery this Saturday, this show was originally inspired by the bringing of the show Albion to the top half floor of 'Period of Grace'. Sometimes a curator can be pushed creatively to put on a show he didnt expect to put on and this was the case with the show I have put on downstairs. It is called Hibernia, and is an exploration of the physical and emotional landscape of the Celt, of course there is no such thing as a true Celt or Brit, we are all mixtures. I have curated a landscape of welsh landscapes and an installation of the River Foyle by paddy doherty is in the back room.

There are theatrical performances organised by Dominick Cullen in the dark gallery at 5.30 and 6.30 on the 4th may, 5.30 and 6.30 on the 11th may, the 15th may at 6pm which will be followed by a discussion and the final performance on 19th may.  I will give a talk on my show and some of the artists will give a talk on their work.

We have 'ALBION' up stairs run by the charming Chelsea Davine and Ben Whittington till the 26th may on which day Hibernia will close also.

'Too Long in Exile' will have a preshow of music, irish poetryand dance for 20 minutes. Then the show for 40 minutes and afterwards some more music and poetry.

Press Release ALBION Exhibition, The Shed Gallery

‘Albion’ - an exhibition of photography, paintings and sculpture from Chelsea Davine and The Shed Gallery

When: 28th April – 26th May 2013
Where: Period of Grace Gallery, 42a College Green, Bristol, BS1 5SH
Private View: Sunday 28th April at 6pm
‘Albion’ is the oldest known Ancient Greek name for Britain, and was chosen as a name for this exhibition in response to the spotlight that has been shone on the UK during over the last 18 months. Through the reminder of our Royal heritage with the Jubilee celebrations and the quest for sporting success during London 2012, ‘Albion’ aims to celebrate our identity as a nation through photography, print and artwork. Our coastline, ancient lands and identity defined by invasion, hills and valleys, provide constant inspiration for the Shed’s creative community, and the exhibition is a reflection of the artists’ and photographers’ desire to record and contemplate their surroundings. Sweeping seascapes, interiors documenting the minutiae of everyday life, the grand eloquence of our historic architecture to its people, flora and fauna. ‘Albion’ aims to capture elements of how we see and feel about the United Kingdom – nostalgic, sentimental, proud, diverse, eccentric and bawdy at times, and is a quest to find its inner beauty, past and present, which may possibly define how we see ourselves in the future.
The Shed was founded by Chelsea Davine and Ben Whittington to offer artists and photographers a full e-commerce website within a larger website managed by the Shed team. The initiative is to provide a professional online presence as well as a forum for discussion and support whilst also exhibiting their work throughout the year in different locations and galleries. For further information please visit The Shed Gallery.
The Period of Grace Gallery is located in the heart of Bristol and its founder and curator Charlie Caldecott aims to provide an inspirational space for events, installation artwork and film. The gallery is open Wednesday – Sunday 11am – 7pm. For further information about the gallery and future exhibitions please visit The Period of Grace. tel: 07547 834 550
